Why should I care about having my company show up on AI searches
I hear this question most, so let's answer it directly: why should you care about your AI visibility?
Because the way people find things has changed. Fewer people are Googling, and more are asking their favourite LLM where to find things or what to do in a given situation. Gartner predicted in 2024 that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026, with search marketing losing share to AI chatbots and other virtual agents.
Welcome to zero-click
When people ask an AI instead of a search engine, they click far less. That's the foundation of zero-click: Most interactions with a brand no longer happen on Google, Bing or DuckDuckGo. They happen inside an AI platform (which ever one you choose), which gathers the information and answers the question directly.
The shift was visible before AI answers took over. SparkToro's 2024 zero-click study found that 58.5% of US Google searches ended without a click. And Pew Research found that when Google shows an AI summary, people click a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when there's no summary.
I'd go a step further. The AI platform you use most knows you better than Google ever did, so its answers are specific and personalized to you. It searches across the web to answer your exact question.
SEO got you to the top of the page. Now the page is gone.
For years, businesses invested in SEO (search engine optimization). You searched, and the first link was the prize: it meant the search engine had decided that site had what you were looking for.
That job now belongs to LLMs. When a highly specific question comes in, you want to be in consideration. So your website, and every other platform you use, needs to clearly reflect the services you offer.
It's happening right now.
I've worked with a business that had good SEO and is now in strong consideration for AI search, thanks to decades of great service. That reputation doesn't live only on their website. It's spread across many platforms where people talk about how good their service is.
That's how an LLM forms an idea of your brand: the same message, showing up repeatedly in different places, saying this is the person for the job.
The data points the same way. In Ahrefs' analysis of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest correlation with visibility in Google's AI Overviews (0.664), well ahead of backlinks (0.218) and Domain Rating (0.326). Ahrefs is clear that this is correlation, not proof of cause, but the signal is hard to ignore. Their years of work are now paying off tenfold.
Basic won't be enough
As we move closer to true zero-click, LLMs will get better at surfacing what's genuinely relevant to each person. To be that relevant, your brand can't be basic.
You need a story and a way to differentiate yourself, so that when a unique person comes looking for a unique service, you can offer that niche and specificity.
What to focus on now
Right now, your job is to show up in AI answers. Soon, you'll need to show up and be specific about what you offer.
That's why visibility matters more than ever.
Here's a two-minute test. Open ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity and ask the questions a customer would ask to find a business like yours. Then check:
Are you mentioned at all?
If so, is what's said about you accurate?
Are you described as the specific answer, or lumped in with everyone else?
If you're not showing up, or you're showing up as generic, that's the gap to close.
At Emcrim, I help small businesses see exactly where they stand in AI search and what to fix first. My AI visibility report is a one-time $125. It shows where you appear, where you don't, and what to change. If you later decide to work with me, the $125 is credited toward your first month's retainer.
